BLACK CARE

Black Care is a key part of our mission to use poetry and the creative arts as a way to invoke social change and improve our communities.

Every October we run Black Care, our programme of events which runs throughout Care Leavers week and Black History month. Amplifying and celebrating the experience of Britain's Black, Care Experienced population through academic talks, panels and creative community events.

In 2024 we are happy to announce the launch of Black Care Oral Histories, our National Lottery Heritage project which will see us continue to build our Black, Care Experienced community by collecting their stories to be archived.

The work we do around being Black and having experience of the care system was inspired by our Artistic Director's lived and professional experience. It was also partly inspired by Barnados' report, 'Double Discrimination', the report highlighted the discrimination faced by many young Black people who have been in the care system, the negative impact this has on their lives and is calling for urgent change.

Our Black Care programmes and heritage project is our response. Our way to make change, shed light on history and improve the future lives of Black children in the care system.
